Tournament Schedule (subject to change)
Friday, March 27
Saturday, March 28
Sunday, March 29
For purposes of Player Conduct, Machine Malfunction, Stuck Balls, Errors, and Rulings, we will follow the rules of PAPA 12, from www.papa.org., unless otherwise announced and/or posted on the web page at www.virginiapinball.org.
Main Tournament
The Main Tournament will feature a 2-day qualifying session and a seeded bracket, for which ALL players will qualify. The top half of qualifiers will be in the double elimination half of the bracket, and the bottom half will be in the single elimination bracket. It will be split into A (Expert) and B (Novice) divisions. Players will choose which division they belong in, but tournament officials have the right to move players up if they feel that they belong in a higher division.
Beginning this year (2009) we have eliminated the Registration Fee. There will only be a set fee per qualifying entry. All qualifying entries will cost $10 in the A Division and $5 in the B Division. All entry fees will be paid out in prizes.
The top qualifier in each Division will receive 10% of their division's entry fees. The split between 1st through 4th place will be 50%-25%-10%-5%.
Playing of a Qualifying Entry:
On each entry, players will pick 3 of the 5 games designated for their division's qualifying bank and play them. They will get points based on the scores on that entry compared to all the other scores on the game, and the points will be tallied. The player with the most points on a single entry will be the highest seed. Scores from different entries may not be combined.
Qualifying for the Main Tournament will be limited, at the discretion of tournament officials, during the Classics Tournament on Saturday. Players may not be able to qualify on certain games during specific parts of the Classics Tournament.
Anti-Sandbagging Provision, applicable to the Main Tournament:
Players may not play in the B Division of the Main Tournament if they:
Playoff Rules:
March Madness:
The main bracket tournament for A and B division will be a hybrid single/double elimination, with advantages given to the higher seeds in the form of a bye and/or double elimination. Lower seeds will be placed directly into the lower bracket for single elimination play.
In 2-player matches, higher seed will have first pick of Game or Player Order. After that, loser gets pick.
Classics Tournament
In the Classics Tournament, beginning at 8:00 on Friday evening, players will be placed in brackets, seeded by a one ball, one handed competition on a random game, and play a single elimination bracket on games from 1990 and earlier to determine the champion.
Entry into the Classics Tournament costs $15, with a possible buy-in into the 2nd round for first round losers. All entry fees will be paid out in prizes. The winner will receive 60% of the entry fees, 30% will go to the runner up, and 3rd place will get 10
The last entry into the Classics Tournament will be sold at 8:00 PM, with the possible exception of Re-Buys depending upon bracket space. No Re-Buys will be available for any open spaces beyond the first elimination round.
Mini-Tournaments
The Fairfax Pinball Open will have three mini-tournaments. Each will cost $5 for 2 mini-tournament entries.
Mini-Tournaments will be played in two divisions. Competitors will play in the same division as they play in the Main Tournament. However, if one player in the Split Flipper tournament is from A Division and the other is from B, the entry counts only as an A entry.
Ben Franklin Tournament
The Ben Franklin tournament, for the real high rollers, will be the same as the Cousin It mini-tournament, but will cost $100 to enter. Each player will get one chance to put up the highest Cousin It score possible. The highest score will take all the cash and a certificate. The Ben Franklin tournament will take place soon after the Main Tournament playoffs end. If there are more than 4 players, then there will be a final-four bracket elimination, time permitting.
The Gauntlet Tournament
The Gauntlet is a fun new event that requires each player to put up a minimum score on each of 4 different games in the least time possible. A combination of speed and strategy. Details to be announced. If there is sufficient interest on Sunday, the Gauntlet will be played in A and B divisions.
Doubles Tournament
A traditional team event. Players shall sign up with a partner. $10 per team. Winner take all, unless there are at least 6 teams, and then it will be 75/25. Seeding will be reverse order of “best-player” WPPR ranking. Teams with no WPPR player would get 1st seed. Game Pick and Play Order will go to the Highest Seed on every game. Only machines with 4-player scoring are eligible.
Final game list, as well as the games to be included in each qualifying bank, will be posted as the date grows closer.
